The History
Naturally we are all smitten with the Ford GT40, however Lola is also an evocutive name with the T70 being very much a contemporary of the GT40. Who cannot be stirred by the wonderful rumbles and bellows produced by the Chevrolet V8 Lola T70s; sounding only slightly less spine-tingling than the GT40 webers chiming on full song.
Ultimately
not as successful in high profile
events as the GT40, the T70 competed
throughout the mid-sixties and first
won the Can-Am championship in 1966 driven
by the peerless John Surtees. Other
notable drivers were Mark Donohue, Brian
Redman, Frank Gardner, Denny Hulme and
David Piper to name but a few.
Lest we forget it was the Lola Mk6 on which Ford seized as their 'role model' for the design of the GT40, following the rebuffed offer by Enzo Ferrari. Eric Broadley, founder of Lola, being engaged to spearhead the project initially. Lola has remained a consistent force in the upper echelons of motor sport now over 6 decades. For in depth information on the history of the company please check out www.lolaheritage.co.uk which is an excellent site.
